Characteristics of Prayer - Sahih Bukhari

I always wonder what is the "perfect" way to perform solat.
The best way is to pray the way Nabi Muhammad s.a.w prayed.
Questions like these have been in my head since Idonotknowwhen:

  1. How many times do we have to raise our hands up to the level of our shoulders?
  2. Why do most imams in Masjid or Surau (even in Southampton) prolong the first 2 rakaat and shorten the last 2 rakaat? etc.

Well now I have the answers and would like to share them with you.

Translation of Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 12:

  • Number 701 : Narrated by Abu Huraira
The Prophet said, "The Imam is to be followed. Say the Takbir when he says it;
bow if he bows; raise your heads when he raises his head,
when he says, "Sami' a-l-lahu Liman hamida",
say, "Rabbana wa-laka-l-hamd",
prostrate if he prostrates and pray sitting altogether if he prays sitting."

  • Number 705 : Narrated by 'Abdullah bin ' umar :
I saw Allah's Apostle opening the prayer with the Takbir and raising his hands to the level of his shoulders at the time saying the Takbir, and on saying the Takbir for bowing he did the same; and when he said, "Sami a-l-lahu Liman hamida", he did the same and then said,
"Rabbana wa laka-lhamd." But he did not do the same on prostrating and on lifting the head from it.

  • Number 710 : Narrated by Anas bin Malik
The Prophet, Abu Bakr and 'Umar used to start the prayer with
"Al-hamdu lil-lahi Rabbil-'ala-min
(All praises are for Allah the Lord of the Worlds)."

  • Number 711 : Narrated by Abu Huraira
Allah's Apostle used to keep silent between the Takbir and the recitation of Qur'an and that interval of silence used to be a short one. I said to the Prophet "May my parents be sacrificed for you! What do you say in the pause between Takbir and recitation?" The Prophet said, "I say, 'Allahumma, ba'id baini wa baina khatayaya kama ba'adta baina-l-mashriqi wa-l-maghrib. Allahumma, naqqim min khatayaya kama yunaqqa-ththawbu-l-abyadu mina-ddanas. Allahumma, ighsil khatayaya bil-ma'i wa-th-thalji wal-barad (O Allah! Set me apart from my sins (faults) as the East and West are set apart from each other and clean me from sins as a white garment is cleaned of dirt (after thorough washing). O Allah! Wash off my sins with water, snow and hail.)"

Impressive eyh. I never knew this before. I have always thought that he recited the Doa Iftitah.

  • Number 725 : Narrated by Jabir bin Samura
Sa'd said, "I used to pray with them a prayer similar to that of Allah's Apostle (the prayer of Zuhr and 'Asr) reducing nothing from them. I used to prolong the first two Rakat and shorten the last two Rak'at." 'Umar said to Sa'd "This was what we thought about you."

Will continue next time.
Need to get ready for school and uni fruit market!
Hope these hadiths help.

  1. hadith no 275.. Saad abi Waqqas ra. was sent by Umar to be the General (of the conquest) and then Governor of Persia but when the Persians accepted Islam and prayed behind him, they accused him of reducing the prayers. They complained to Umar (the amirul mukminin) and Umar replaced Saad with someone else. Then Saad told Umar like what stated in the hadith..
